What is Three Sides of a Secret
A creative collaboration of musicians and a poet, who strive to produce a form of art that will evoke an emotional hit on a different level from more conventional song based music. Influenced by the concept albums of the 70’s and the original new wave and left field music of the 80’s and 90’s, Three Sides of a Secret bring acoustic atmospheres and textures into play with evocative wordsmithing.
The poetry speaks to a different place than a song melody, or just pure instrumental, and the combination of instrumental soundscapes as an interpretation of the poem is a potent combination for the listener.
The musical compositions can have, and often are with, an introductory section to set the emotional tone or context with evocative visual and tonal atmospheres, leading to the poem. Creating a living vibrant context for the words.
Each piece in the first album is new territory for the artistes where the poems and music roam new and experimental worlds. The music and soundscapes take the listener to unfamiliar landings and greet them in novel touches. Rules are not followed, intentionally so, but the compositions always lead to the beauty of the melody or texture as the setting within which the poem will glow its light.
The three have been working together to create this latest album for a year and have previously known each other lifelong. The music and poetry are a product of wide and deep experience and influence in music, life and emotion.
It may not be to everyone’s taste and that is normal but even a single listen might unearth or wake a thought or memory that bubbles to the surface and enhances the life of the listener at some level. All we ask is for those who our compositions touch to be open to what is given in the music and poetry we have made. You will understand something new.
The aspiration is to produce a live performance of a set of the poems to be delivered in all sorts of venues and this will be publicised as and when we get engaged to play.
Our poems encompass romance, life and death, beauty and pleasure over lots of dimensions. Our aim is that we offer you a connection where you can plug into our brains through this music and feel the times and feelings of the poems.
We are all native Bristolians, and our music and poetry carries an essence of the Bristol culture, the Bristol flavour of creativity and sound.
We are here and giving our offerings of moments of beauty for the enjoyment of anyone who might be able to step outside of their day to day lives, and listen, just for the moment.

About the music
None of this music has been anywhere near AI. It’s all been created, by the three, from the feel of the words and abstract feelings and concepts at the time. It’s what was evoked by the words or it was created to form a textural atmosphere around an idea.
There are few instruments; some sampled sounds, guitars, a synth or two and old 1990’s drum machine samples. It’s not modern in feel but it’s modern in birth. We have at times made short pieces and also the occasional long piece; it’s how they came out.
The three
Daren Hill
Poet · Wordsmith
Poet and extraordinary wordsmith, though that isn’t his only talent. Daren is also an accomplished rock drummer, and that’s not even his day job. He has been writing poetry since his early teens and has studied countless poets. A literary maestro.
Dave Bence
Guitar · Bass · Keyboards · Sound design · Composition
Dave has been a musician all his life, alongside his day job, always composing and innovating. Music is his passion, and he has a deep interest in the fabric of the musical lexicon.
Ian Herbert
Synthesiser · Keyboards · Sequence and drum machine programming · Composition · Mastering
Ian has been composing and playing music since his early teens, and built his first synthesiser to play in bands at school. He loves all types of music, especially when it pushes the boundaries. Ian is proud to have his roots in Bristol, together with Dave and Daren, and the raw, innovative Bristol sound runs through his veins.
